Detailed Answer
1. Understand Unclaimed Property under Indiana Law
Unclaimed property includes bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds and safe‐deposit contents left inactive. Indiana’s Uniform Disposition of Unclaimed Property Act defines this in Indiana Code § 32-33-2. For definitions, see IC 32-33-2.
2. Search the Indiana Unclaimed Property Database
Visit the Indiana Attorney General’s searchable database at indianaunclaimed.gov. Enter the decedent’s full name, any known aliases, and last city or county of residence. If no results appear, try variations of spelling or middle initials.
3. Gather Required Documentation
To prove your entitlement, assemble:
- A certified copy of the death certificate.
- Proof of heirship—this may be a will, letters of administration, or a small estate affidavit under IC 29-1-7-6.
- Your government‐issued photo ID (driver’s license or passport).
4. File a Claim with the Attorney General
Complete the online claim form on the unclaimed property portal. Upload scanned copies of your documents. The Attorney General has 90 days to review claims per Indiana Code § 32-33-8 (IC 32-33-8).
5. Receive and Review Payment
Once approved, you will receive payment by check or electronic transfer. Keep all correspondence and review for accuracy. If you spot errors, contact the Unclaimed Property Division immediately.
